University teaching in a foreign language: New challenges for educators and students?
The past decade has witnessed rapid growth in terms of internationalization and globalization at institutions of higher education in northern Europe. As a result of the increasing influx of students coming from heterogeneous linguistic and educational backgrounds into Denmark, the University of Copenhagen (KU) implemented a language policy based on the parallel language use of Danish and English.
To support this internal language policy, as well as ensure quality in educational programmes and research, KU established the Centre for Internationalisation and Parallel Language Use (CIP) in 2008 as a research, competence development and resource centre. The Centre’s research focuses on the field of parallel language use in an academic context, on the basis of which the Centre offers language courses in both Danish and English, tailored to the various needs across the University. In addition to research and training, CIP also serves as a resource site for academic students and staff and the general public by maintaining an electronic library of publications and reference work related to the field.
This presentation will provide more specific details about the initiatives KU has undertaken to establish a transparent system for quality assurance in relation to the language skills, both Danish and English, of staff and students. The presenter will focus on a new performance-based EAP certification test, the Test of Oral English Proficiency for Academic Staff (TOEPAS), developed by the Centre and used for assessing whether university lecturers have sufficient oral proficiency for coping with the communicative demands of English-medium instruction.
