In 2013, the University of Copenhagen launched the Language Strategy: a 5-year research-supported project aimed at developing and sustaining the implementation of solutions to ensure the best framework for the improvement of students’ language skills across the university in different subject areas and learning environments.
One of the Language Strategy pilot projects, ‘Reading Strategies in German and French for Literature students’, was organized upon request of Comparative Literature where a considerate decline was noticed in the ability of students to read texts related to their field in the original language. Consequently, a course with the aim to introduce reading strategies in general and to strengthen the students’ reading skills was organized and run parallel to the students’ content course.

Simultaneously, across KU, a request for similar reading strategies courses increased as more and more students from a variety of fields realized they would like to gain the ability to read texts in their field in the original language, without having to enroll in an all-in language course. As a result, a variety of adapted versions of ‘Reading Strategies in German and French for Literature students’ are offered and taught across KU in different fields and faculties such as: philosophy, pedagogy, archeology, theology, and science.

In my presentation, I will introduce the various types of reading strategy courses; I will elaborate on their organization and content, and I will discuss the feedback from both teachers and students.
