Attitudes towards English as the language of instruction among Danish university lecturers

Project description

English is increasingly being used as the language of instruction at Danish universities. This growing use of English at universities has led to some debate – not just at the universities themselves but also in the media and in parliament. Although this debate has been lively in the universities, newspapers, and parliament, no one has set out to systematically investigate the attitudes of university personnel to these questions. That is what this project has been intended to do.

Project participants

Christian Jensen, Lars Stenius Stæhr, Jacob Thøgersen, and others.

Researchers at CIP carried out an investigation in the summer of 2009 entitled "Underviseres holdninger til engelsk som undervisningssprog - en spørgeskemaundersøgelse på Københavns Universitet" (English translation “Lecturers attitudes towards English as the language of instruction – a survey-based investigation at the University of Copenhagen”). The background to the investigation, the methodology used, and initial results are described in this report. Write CIP at cip@hum.ku.dk to get a copy of the report (a 62-page PDF file). The report is in Danish, but includes an English summary. This summary, together with English versions of all tables and figures, can be found in an appendix.
