CIP Symposium 2025:
New Literacies - the role of multilingualism and generative AI

Abstract

This year’s symposium explores the role of multilingualism and generative AI in the development of new literacies in higher education. Much research has focused on the role of multilingualism and its benefits, and there is emerging research on the advantages and disadvantages of using generative AI for educational purposes. However, these two topics are rarely researched together in relation to the recent innovations in academic and disciplinary literacies. Thus, this symposium brings together scholars who will offer perspectives on how we may critically address the potential of multilingualism and generative AI in academic settings.

The presentations will provide insights into how AI is taken up in teaching, learning, and research, as well as what stances different stakeholders in academia hold towards its use. Moreover, they will shed light on the conceptual and methodological challenges that a multilingual characterization of the construct of literacy in academia entails and discuss the need for a model of multilingual communicative competence as the foundation of disciplinary literacy.

The symposium will contribute to discussions on how perceptions and models of academic and disciplinary literacies change given the introduction of GenAI in increasingly multilingual contexts at internationalized universities.
