CIP visits Bergen and Bilbao

Bergen 

Professor Janus Mortensen and academic language consultant Katja Årosin Laursen participated in and contributed to two events at the University of Bergen on 6 and 7 December. The seminar Norwegian Proficiency in Academia - from Words to Action was about a new action plan for Norwegian language for specific purposes in academia.

Janus gave a presentation on the language policy situation at the University of Copenhagen and explained what lies behind the concept of internationalisation 2.0 and the new language policy at the UCPH.

Katja participated in a research seminar on language use and language acquisition in Nordic higher education. The aim of the seminar was to bring together researchers from different educational institutions working in this area and to form a new network. Katja gave a presentation on the CIP podcast Language Use at UCPH, which presents different voices and dilemmas from everyday language use at the university.

Bilbao

Professor Slobodanka Dimova participated in the workshop Local Languages as the Language of Instruction in the University, which took place on the 29th of November at the Faculty of Science and Technology at University of the Basque Country in Bilbao. The main objective of the workshop was to involve different stakeholders (teachers, students, and management) in a discussion about the implementation of English-medium instruction (EMI) and its possible influence on the local languages. This discussion is important for the Basque context because alongside internationalization, the university’s mission has also been enhancement of the status of academic Basque.

Slobodanka’s presentation The Role of Languages in Internationalization of Higher Education: Policy and Practice provided an overview of the UCPH policy implementation practices in which CIP has been involved in the past years, focusing on student and teacher language development and language choice for the purpose of effective communication at the university.
