Students' Use of AI in Academic Writing, New Podcast Episode

The third episode of CIP's podcast series Language Use at KU has just been released, and it focuses on students' use of generative AI (GAI) in connection with their studies. Katja Årosin from CIP talks with three guests about how students use GAI in their academic lives, especially in academic writing, and what they think about it and why.

The students mention, among other things, time-saving, idea generation, and help with grammar and structure as advantages of GAI. However, all three guests are also very aware that the use of GAI has ethical consequences, including issues related to copyright, confidentiality, environmental impact, and data collection.

We discuss how students find a balance between, on the one hand, developing their own academic voice in their assignments and maintaining a sense of authorship, and on the other hand, using GAI in relevant and ethically responsible ways.

Additionally, we talk about whether GAI use can truly support learning, or if it is simply a shortcut to reading and text production without actual processing and learning. Finally, the students call for a more open conversation about GAI usage, joint testing of tools with instructors, and clearer rules for the use of GAI.

The episode is in English, and you can find it on KU’s podcast page: Language Use at KU – University of Copenhagen. On the same page, you will also find both a Danish and an English summary of the content.
