AI language tools: University students’ usage and perceptions in Sweden
Amy Wanyu Ou, Chalmers University of Technology
In this talk, Amy Wanyu Ou will present the major findings of a nation-wide survey on students’ use of and attitudes towards chatbots and other AI language tools for learning among universities in Sweden. Two aspects of analysis will be discussed: First, a descriptive summary of the survey results that demonstrates the overall prevalence and pattern of students’ usage of AI, and their general attitudes towards AI. Second, a thematic analysis of the open comments. Informed by post-humanist applied linguistics theories, the findings highlight AI’s essential role as part of the spatial repertoire that constitutes students’ competence for academic writing. The findings also suggest a new “spatially advised learner” identity that students developed through AI-mediated academic writing, which enabled them to assert their agency in language and content knowledge learning.
The survey findings provide both comprehensive and in-depth insights into Swedish university students’ lived experience of AI in academic communication. The study is hoped to help inform language education for AI-mediated academic writing that can address students’ specific needs, concerns, and stances.
