New grant from the Independent Research Fund Denmark

From 2023-2027, Professor Slobodanka Dimova from CIP will lead a research project on developing a new model of communicative competence in multilingual higher education. The project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark with nearly 6 million Danish kroner and is titled "Towards a new model of communicative competence in multilingual higher education."

In linguistic research, the concept of communicative competence plays a central role and has undergone continuous development. However, researchers point out that existing models of communicative competence poorly reflect communicative practices in multilingual contexts.

Through interdisciplinary research and close collaboration between researchers and practitioners, the project aims to contribute to the development of a new model of communicative competence in multilingual higher education.

The project is led by Professor Slobodanka Dimova from the Center for Internationalization and Parallel Language Use at the University of Copenhagen, in collaboration with Associate Professor Joyce Kling from Lund University, Professor Ute Smit from the University of Vienna, and Professor Hans Malmström from Chalmers University of Technology. Assistant Professor Sanne Larsen from CIP is also participating in the project, and a postdoctoral researcher and a Ph.D. student will be employed at CIP from August 2024.

The project focuses on analyzing the challenges in various educational contexts, particularly when it comes to supporting English-medium university programs in areas where English is not the most widely spoken language. Communicative practices are increasingly characterized by linguistic diversity.
