International Master’s students and language

A survey study of the language needs of international Master’s students at the University of Copenhagen.

Aim

The aim of the project is to gain a better understanding of the linguistic needs, wants and background of international Master’s students enrolled at the University of Copenhagen. It is hoped that the information obtained through the survey will help identify potential weaknesses in the provision of language support and facilitate various language-strengthening initiatives. The project spans over six months and is based on two related questionnaires distributed in the autumn of 2014 and in February 2015. The purpose of the second questionnaire, which closely resembled the first, was to compare the students’ answers and record potential changes in needs and wants.

The project focuses on newly arrived international Master’s students at the following four faculties:

• Faculty of Humanities

• Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

• Faculty of Theology

• Faculty of Science

The survey results will be compiled and described in a report outlining the current situation. The report will also provide recommendations on how language support for international Master’s students can be designed, implemented and promoted in future.
