Reading skills in English for students of History
The project Reading skills in English for students of History developed a component in reading skills in academic English and integrated it into a course that introduces undergraduate students of History to the study skills and methods required for working with the subject’s sources and literature.
The project is exemplary in the sense that it worked with reading strategies as a study skill in close relation to mandatory academic texts on the syllabus. The project also offered workshops in a fruitful cooperation between the language instructor and the history teachers. This approach was praised by students in the evaluation of the course as highly beneficial for reading and understanding the relevant academic texts in English.
The project also unveiled a need for further development of the history teachers’ competences in order to enable them to teach reading strategies themselves in future.
